Our Story

Two coauthors. One kitchen table. One very opinionated cat.

Michele and Dylan make every MaxiCat book together — words and pictures shaped side by side, with MaxiCat, ever the boss, getting the final say.

The real MaxiCat

Who is MaxiCat?

The real MaxiCat. What is his story?

He stares at the tree line like it owes him money. He chases beetles. He escapes. Every single one of his bad ideas has ended up in a book — which is exactly why young readers love him.

Michele — coauthor

Michele starts early in the morning with a notebook and far too much tea. She's spent years around children and aims for the age when reading turns from a chore into a habit — short chapters, big voices, and jokes that land. She sketches ideas as often as she writes them.

Dylan — coauthor

Dylan draws MaxiCat in pencil, oil pastel, and marker, sketching him from life while the real cat refuses to sit still. He shapes the storytelling as much as the pictures — pages go back and forth covered in each other's notes.

How a MaxiCat book gets made

  • MaxiCat does something ridiculous. Somebody writes it down.
  • They plot it out together until it's a story a young reader can take on alone.
  • Words and drawings develop side by side, draft after draft.
  • They argue happily over every page until it's right.
